........Mr Schroeder went a step further. In an interview with the news magazine Der Spiegel he insisted that Georgia had "detonated" the war in the Caucasus by invading South Ossetia.

He went on to brand the Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili "a gambler" and implied that Russia's invasion was justified because Georgia had American military advisers in the country.

His remarks contrasted sharply with the more pro-Georgian stance of his party colleague and German foreign minister Frank Walter Steinmeier, who has been struggling to mediate in the conflict.
