The Republican Party ended slavery, the democrat party, both north and south, fought to keep slavery going

Senator Lyman Trumbull (R- IL), the person who wrote the 13th Amendment. Passage of this amendment to abolish slavery had been part of the Republicans' 1864 national platform.

On this day in 1865, the 13th Amendment was passed in the U.S. House of Representatives, with unanimous Republican support and against intense Democrat opposition. In the U.S. Senate, Republican support had also been unanimous, but all Democrats voted against it. One of those pro-slavery Senators would be the Democrat vice presidential nominee in 1876 and 1884.
