Apply, wait, worry: Twin Cities job seekers struggle even to find work for the summer

Bee Yang spent six months looking for a job before landing a gig working the counter at a St. Paul ice cream institution for the summer.

Just how hard is it to find a job these days?

Plenty, say employers who are finding people eager to land work, even if it's temporary. Gertens in Inver Grove Heights hires about 250 seasonal workers; this year it got 1,200 applications. Anoka County Parks and Recreation got more than 1,500 applicants for its summer jobs, a 50 percent jump from last year.

Employers — local governments and businesses — across the metro have seen a significant increase in the number of people looking for seasonal jobs, and they say the bad economy is the driving force. Many applicants have reached a point where they're looking for any source of income, whether it is working at a concessions stand or landscaping.

Yang, 19, feels lucky. Though he had worked at the Dari-ette Drive In two years ago, this time he had to compete with more than twice the usual number of applicants to return.

"Most of the people I've seen this year are completely desperate," said Angela Fida, owner of the Dari-ette, which is open from April through October. "I still have people coming up for applications on a daily basis."
